Muammar Gaddafi's Late Antique Style ...

Last night, watching the news coverage of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi of Libya's meeting with President Jacob Zuma of South Africa, I felt a sartorial sense of déjà vu ...

And then it clicked.

The Cranky Colonel had based his wardrobe not on traditional Muslim or African drapery styles, but on those of Late Antiquity ... I don't have any photos of examples from Cyrene or Leptis Magna handy, but here's one from Ephesus (source)

The style is one Gaddafi clearly favours, since he sported a variation in April (source):

Different strokes for different folks, etc., and one has to admire his creative clothing.

As long as he doesn't, please God,  pop over to Tunis, and isn't inspired to emulate this Late Roman mosaic in the Bardo (source) ...
