Gold strip from the Staffordshire Hoard, detail

The Latin inscription is on two sides, so the strip could not have been attached to a scabbard - which was my first guess, given the nature of the text on it from Numbers, and the martial nature of many of the other finds. The Latin, amusingly, has a number of spelling mistakes ... My guess would be that this was part of another cross - again, it's bent to whoever buried it was not interested in its religious significance.
