The architecture of Turkish mosques was based on Christian churches, which was in turn based on Roman basilicas. In Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Syria mosques were based on Mohammed's house at Medina. Whilst there were towns in the Middle East, many of the people were semi-nomadic, so used portable mosques, such as the one illustrated in this manuscript.
